Nancy Gin, MD, FACP, is executive vice president of quality and chief quality officer for The Permanente Federation, overseeing clinical quality and safety for more than 23,000 physicians nationwide in 8 Kaiser Permanente regions from Hawaii to the Mid-Atlantic and 12.6 million members. Her responsibilities include leadership of the National Permanente Quality Leaders and co-lead of the Kaiser Permanente National Quality Committee. Dr. Gin’s portfolio also includes performance on Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures, evolution of systems of care among regions for alignment and consistency of care and outcomes, development of national quality strategy, co-coordination of national Kaiser Permanente Quality Symposium, national Continuing Medical Education oversight, national family violence prevention, organization of the Permanente Quality Board, co-executive oversight of Safety Management System for Kaiser Permanente, co-executive sponsorship of Precision Medicine and Genomics efforts, quality in telehealth, and executive sponsorship of Cancer Care, Mental Health and Wellness, Women’s and Children’s Health, and Dignified Journeys initiatives.
She also serves as the medical director of Quality and Clinical Analysis for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG). Dr. Gin’s teams are responsible for leveraging the integration of Kaiser Permanente’s care delivery systems with digital solutions and innovations to support ongoing quality excellence in preventive and equitable care, acute and chronic disease management, procedural and palliative care, family violence prevention, and telehealth. She also oversees SCPMG’s Research and Evaluation that publishes more than 400 peer-reviewed articles a year in health outcomes and health services research, as well as the Regional Reference Laboratory Services in Southern California. Dr. Gin also supports Kaiser Permanente as a learning organization through leadership of continuing medical education nationally and graduate medical education in Southern California, and additionally oversees precision medicine and genomics efforts.
She has also participated in the U.S. Health and Human Services Health Quality Summit, the Task Force on Telehealth [partnership of National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), American Telemedicine Association, and Alliance for Connected Care], and sits on the Standards Committee for the NCQA.
Prior to these roles, Dr. Gin served as the medical director and chief of staff for Kaiser Permanente Orange County. She has more than 30 years of internal medicine expertise and leadership experience. She was instrumental in the development and opening of the Kaiser Permanente Orange County-Irvine Medical Center in 2008. Dr. Gin joined SCPMG in 1997 following her tenure on the clinical faculty of the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine.
She is board certified in internal medicine and is a member of the California Medical Association and fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Gin earned her Bachelor of Science and medical degrees from the University of Arizona and completed her internship, residency, and fellowship in Internal Medicine at the University of California, Irvine.
She is a well-respected clinician who has co-authored and published clinical papers and book chapters on topics including domestic violence, hypertension, and health policy in bioethics. She is an advocate for public service and equity in health care, and a dedicated educator, recognized with several awards for teaching and outstanding academic contributions. In 2022, she was named one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Innovators.
